20151216: Spring launch for 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan

  • "As is the way of these things, the new model is larger in every dimension than the previous model – in this case longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase too. It’s also lower, which is another common route for SUVs to go down. Unlike the rough tracks which it’s now harder for them to go down.

All those extra dimensions mean of course that the interior is larger, so that everyone gains room, and so too does the luggage, which has a space up to 615 litres to fill. What level of kit is going to be in the cabin has yet to be announced.

In terms of power, VW will be basing the model on a series of turbodiesels with some emission and consumption figures that will be keenly looked at. The range will start with a 1.6-litre unit putting out 114bhp, while three 2.0-litre units will culminate in one with 217bhp. There will be a couple of petrol options, a 1.4 and a 2.0-litre turbo, but they won’t form the bulk of the sales.

A GTE plug-in hybrid may well make it into production. The conept vehicle had a 1.4-litre petrol engine working with an electric motor. Together they gave 215bhp with a claimed CO2 figure of just 42g/km and consumption of a claimed 149mpg.

If you want four-wheel drive to go with those SUV looks then you’ll need to buy one of the more powerful versions, since base models will come with two-wheel drive. Power will come through a six-speed manual or there will be a DSG twin-clutch auto option.

Prices have yet to be announced, but presumably they’ll be based on the current pricing which starts at £22,975. There will be an R-Line model which should top the range. Deliveries to UK showrooms should begin in the spring."
